The New Zealand Amateur Athletics Association published the first issue of NZ Athletic News in 1984. Both the magazine and the organisation have undergone many changes since that time. In 1989 the NZAAA was renamed Athletics New Zealand and therefore the magazine’s name was changed to Athletics NZ News.

Recognising the need to improve communication to members, the magazine underwent a major revamp in 2002 which resulted in a professionally produced magazine with colour pages being distributed free to members via their clubs. Subsequently the magazine was renamed Athletics in Action in 2006, and further improvements to the quality and layout  were made. (Pdf versions of Athletics in Action can be found below.)

In a further move to improve communication Athletics New Zealand is now distributing Athletics in Action to members with email electronically. This change in approach has been made possible by the new Athletics New Zealand database which will increasingly allow the organisation to better communicate to members and service their interests. Athletics in Action 159 July is the first issue to be distributed in this way.
